Course Overview

Students will use skills of historical and geographical analysis to explore the early history of the United States and understand ideas and events that strengthened the union. The standards for this course relate to the history of the United States from Reconstruction until the Present. Students will continue to learn fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography as they study United States history in chronological sequence and learn about change and continuity in our history. The study of history must emphasize the intellectual skills required for responsible citizenship. Students practice these skills as they extend their understanding of the essential knowledge defined by all of the standards for history and social science.

Chapter 16 Life at the Turn of the 20th Century: 1870 - 1915

In class, we have discussed the following questions:
  1. Why do you think southern whites were so determined to use custom and law to keep blacks separate from whites?
  2. Why did public schools gain more students in the late 1800s?
  3. Compare the ideas of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.
  4. Describe three ways African Americans were discriminated against after Reconstruction.
  5. How did the NAACP help African Americans during the early 1900s?
  6. How did new sources of manufactured goods change how people shopped?
  7. Why were more women entering the work force in the early 1900s?
You are now working on Mash-up Video based on one of the three topics (Education, Jim Crow Laws, and the Role of Women) discussed in class. Your video is to tell the story of what occurred during that particular time. You are to include pictures, naratives, captions, and music. Remember to be CREATIVE!

Once you have completed your video, please post it below under the comments section with the names of the people in your group. Your video is to be posted no later than Friday, December 2nd.
